Jaejun Lee is a Korean ceramicist working in Cardiff. He moved to Cardiff and set up his own studio in 2018, where he now spends most of his days.

“Ten years ago, I started throwing at University, and now I have become a person who makes a living with bowls. Sometimes I feel that I am quite used to it, but sometimes I still feel like a beginner. As I work everyday, I realize that I need much longer time and much more effort to be skilled. In the way I work, it is very important to have skilled techniques as my aim is to make good quality things. There are so many products in the world; so many things that are spread in front of us which we do not know where they came from or how they were made. We use some goods because of their cheap prices, and sometimes we are tempted by certain goods because of their high costs. However, we do not know goods themselves well. All the things that have been produced have their own proper values, and maker’s motives of making them. We are no longer interested in any of these backgrounds because of a mechanized system. Now, I would like to ask you to have more active and keen interest in things. Everything has its own value, and maker’s care and the value of labour. I work every day for value of my labour, and I want to communicate with people through what I made. I hope that people use things in their lives, and make a deep connection through using it, and grow their lives with that affection. I try my best to enrich our lives as a member of this world.”

Artist cerameg Coreaidd sy’n gweithio yng Nghaerdydd yw Jaejun Lee. Symudodd i Gaerdydd a sefydlu ei stiwdio ei hun yno yn 2018 lle mae’n treulio’r rhan fwyaf o’i ddiwrnodau.

“Deng mlynedd yn ôl dechreuais daflu yn y Brifysgol, a bellach rwyf wedi dod yn berson sy’n ennill bywoliaeth drwy greu powlenni. Ar adegau rwy’n teimlo fy mod yn eithaf cyfarwydd â hynny, ond weithiau rwy’n dal i deimlo fel dechreuwr. Gan fy mod yn gweithio bob dydd rwy’n sylwi bod angen lot mwy o amser ac ymdrech i fod yn fedrus. Gyda’r ffordd rwy’n gweithio, mae’n bwysig iawn cael technegau deheuig gan mai fy nod yw creu pethau o ansawdd da. Mae llawer o gynhyrchion yn y byd; cymaint o bethau wedi’u gosod o’n blaen ni nad ydym ni’n gwybod o le maen nhw’n dod a sut cawson nhw eu gwneud. Rydyn ni’n defnyddio rhai nwyddau oherwydd eu prisiau rhad, ac weithiau rydyn ni’n cael ein temtio gan ryw nwyddau oherwydd eu cost ddrud. Fodd bynnag, nid ydym ni’n adnabod y nwyddau eu hunain yn dda iawn. Mae gan bob peth rwyf wedi’i gynhyrchu ei werth priodol, a chymhelliad y gwneuthurwr dros ei greu. Nid oes gennym ddiddordeb bellach yn y cefndir hwn oherwydd y system o fecaneiddio. Nawr, hoffwn eich gofyn chi i gymryd diddordeb mwy byw a brwd mewn pethau. Mae gan bob dim ei werth ei hun, a gofal y gwneuthurwr a gwerth llafur. Rwy’n gweithio bob dydd am werth fy llafur, ac rwyf eisiau cyfathrebu â phobl drwy’r hyn rwyf wedi’u creu. Rwy’n gobeithio bod pobl yn defnyddio pethau yn eu bywydau ac yn creu cysylltiad dwys drwy eu defnyddio a bod eu bywydau’n tyfu gyda’r hoffter hwnnw. Rwy’n ceisio fy ngorau i gyfoethogi bywydau fel aelod o’r byd hwn.”
