Beate Gegenwart is a maker, curator and academic who lives and works on the Gower Peninsular near Swansea. Originally from Germany, she studied at the University of Wales, Cardiff and the University of the West of England, completing two Master degrees. Drawing, mark-making, the explicit connections between material, process and maker as well as an emphasis on concept and idea are all central to her practice as an artist.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally and curated numerous exhibitions, touring to North America, France, The Netherlands and Germany. Her work is held in both national and International collections.

Gegenwart’s primary material is metal and she works mostly with vitreous enamels (glass) on steel, further developed by drawing, mark making, abrading. Firing the pieces several times, the surface is ground and abraded to a matt finish in places, creating new relationships with the enamel; a crossing point between control and chance. Her work is also informed by a passionate interest in digital technologies such as laser and water jet cutting as well as 3D printing.

Mae Beate Gegenwart yn wneuthurwr, curadur ac academydd sy'n byw ac yn gweithio ar Benrhyn Gŵyr ger Abertawe. Yn wreiddiol o'r Almaen, astudiodd ym Mhrifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd ac ym Mhrifysgol Gorllewin Lloegr, gan ennill dau radd Meistr. Mae arlunio, creu marciau, y cysylltiadau amlwg rhwng deunydd, proses a'r gwneuthurwr, yn ogystal â phwyslais ar gysyniad a syniad, oll yn ganolog i'w hymarfer fel artist.

Mae hi wedi arddangos ei gwaith yn genedlaethol ac yn rhyngwladol ac wedi curadu nifer o arddangosfeydd a deithiodd i Ogledd America, Ffrainc, yr Iseldiroedd a'r Almaen. Mae ei gwaith yn rhan o gasgliadau cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol.

Metel yw prif ddeunydd Gegenwart ac mae hi'n gweithio'n bennaf gydag enamelau gwydraidd (gwydr) ar ddur, gan ddatblygu'r gwaith ymhellach trwy arlunio, creu marciau a chrafu. Wrth danio'r darnau sawl gwaith, caiff yr wyneb ei falu a'i grafu i greu gorffeniad di-sglein mewn mannau, gan greu perthnasoedd newydd gyda'r enamel; pwynt croesi rhwng rheolaeth a hap. Mae ei gwaith hefyd yn cael ei lywio gan ddiddordeb brwd mewn technolegau digidol fel torri â laser a jet dŵr, yn ogystal ag argraffu 3D.
