Satoko Takemura was born in Japan. She studied Metalwork at university before becoming a lecturer in Jewellery and Silversmithing in her native homeland. She moved to the UK c.2012, lecturing at the Glasgow School of Art before moving to North Wales, where she is now based. Her studio is located on the Llyn Peninsula.

Her Shibori collection has been inspired by Japanese textiles. The word ‘shibori’ comes from the verb ‘shiboru’, meaning “to wring, squeeze and press”. It is often associated with the famous style of fabric dying particular to Japan but encompasses a wide gamut of fabric manipulation and dying found worldwide.

Her engraving jewellery is inspired by light, texture, and gentle movement. In 2015, I was introduced to hand engraving – a technique that deeply resonated with me. I was immediately drawn to the way engraved lines catch and reflect light, creating a soft, natural shimmer that changes as the wearer moves. This experience reminded me of the way light interacts with fine woven textiles, especially silk, which glows as light touches its fibres. Drawing from this connection, I began to explore how the lights of fabric could be expressed in metal. My Hikari collection also grew from this exploration.

Ganed Satoko Takemura yn Japan. Astudiodd waith metel yn y brifysgol cyn mynd yn ddarlithydd mewn Gemwaith a Gofannu Arian yn ei mamwlad. Symudodd i’r DG oddeutu 2012, gan ddarlithio yn Ysgol Gelf Glasgow cyn symud i ogledd Cymru, lle mae’n byw erbyn hyn. Mae ei stiwdio wedi’i lleoli ar benrhyn Llŷn.

Cafodd ei chasgliad Shibori ei ysbrydoli gan decstilau Japaneaidd. Daw’r gair ‘shibori’ o’r ferf ‘shiboru’, sy’n golygu “trowasgu, gwasgu a chywasgu. Caiff ei gysylltu’n aml â’r arddull enwog o lifo ffabrig sy’n benodol i Japan ond mae’n cwmpasu ystod eang o ddulliau trin a llifo ffabrig sydd i’w canfod ledled y byd.

Caiff fy ngemwaith engrafedig eu hysbrydoli gan olau, gweadedd, a symudiad ysgafn. Yn 2015, cefais fy nghyflwyno i engrafu â llaw – techneg a atseiniodd yn ddwfn ynof fi. Cefais fy nenu yn syth i’r ffordd mae llinellau wedi’u hengrafu yn dal ac yn adlewyrchu golau, gan greu pelydrau tyner, naturiol sy’n newid wrth i’r gwisgwr symud. Gwnaeth y profiad fy atgoffa o’r ffordd mae golau yn rhyngweithio gyda thecstilau gweëdig cain, a sidan yn enwedig, sy’n disgleirio wrth i olau gyffwrdd â’i ffibrau. Gan gymryd o’r cysylltiad hwn, dechreuais archwilio sut mae goleuni ffabrig yn gallu cael ei fynegi mewn metel. Tyfodd fy nghasgliad Hikari o hwn hefyd.
