A series of craft work in focus from Welsh ceramic makers

Having studied ceramics at degree and postgraduate level Simon has been a professional Potter and teacher for more than thirty years. He is a fellow of the CPA ( Craft Potters Association ) and member of SWP (South Wales Potters).

He set up Brook Street Pottery and Gallery in Hay-on-Wye making garden terracotta and exhibiting ceramics and managed the gallery for over twenty years.

Following a series of study trips and residences in Jingdezhen China Simon has now downsized his practice to focus on small-scale porcelain ceramics. He makes bottles cups, beakers and jars which are all hand thrown and glazed with multiple high fired glazes making each piece both functional and unique.

He has a beautiful new studio at his home in Dolau near Presteigne mid Wales where he has recently built an experimental low tech charcoal fired kiln.

The studio is open by appointment and during Art Trails in the region. Simon joined ‘The Haymakers’ cooperative in 2022. The group have a well established gallery in the centre of Hay-on-Wye exhibiting both members work and visiting artists.

Cyfres o waith crefft mewn ffocws gan wneuthurwyr serameg Cymreig

Ar ôl astudio cerameg i lefel gradd ac ôl-radd, mae Simon wedi bod yn grochenydd proffesiynol ac athro ers dros drideg o flynyddoedd. Mae’n gymrawd y Craft Potters Association ac yn aelod o Grochenwyr De Cymru.

Sefydlodd Brook Street Pottery & Gallery yn Y Gelli Gandryll a oedd yn cynhyrchu terracotta i’r ardd ac arddangos cerameg a bu’n rheoli’r oriel am dros ugain mlynedd.

Yn dilyn cyfres o deithiau astudio a phreswyliadau yn Jingdezhen yn Tsieina mae Simon bellach wedi cwtogi ar ei ymarfer er mwyn canolbwyntio ar waith cerameg porslen graddfa fechan. Mae’n cynhyrchu poteli, cwpanau, biceri a jariau sydd oll wedi’u taflu â llaw ac wedi’u gwydro â gwydreddau taniadau uchel lluosog gan greu pob darn sydd at ddefnydd ac yn unigryw.

Mae ganddo stiwdio newydd hardd yn ei gartref yn Nolau, ger Llanandras yn y Canolbarth, lle mae wedi adeiladu odyn dechnoleg syml arbrofol sy’n llosgi golosg. Mae’r stiwdio’n agored drwy drefniant ac yn ystod Llwybrau Celf yr ardal.

Ymunodd Simon â menter gydweithredol ‘The Haymakers’ yn 2022. Mae gan y grŵp oriel sydd wedi hen sefydlu yng nghanol Y Gelli Gandryll ac mae’n arddangos gwaith yr aelodau ac artistiaid gwadd hefyd.
