The world that Peter Lord shows through this exhibition is one of mystery, myth, history and illusion based on his innate sense of curiosity. He references religious themes, the opening of tombs, the Tarot, the phases of the moon and Celtic imagery, as well as the substance of dreams.
Many of his sculptural pieces explore the outside and the hidden inside of an object. The boxes, handmade books, temples and triptychs each hold secrets within, but they are not always what you expect. A black book, which from the outside looks like a large family bible which one would expect to enclose reassuring texts, opens to reveal montages depicting the hopelessness of the human condition. Temples have mirrors and lights within to create the illusion that the inside is larger than the outside. Hidden drawers and concealed lids open to reveal their treasures much like the tomb of Tutankhamun, opened in the 1920s and the Winchester mortuary chests, opened in the 2010s.
The narrative thread has always been important to Peter Lord and runs through all the work he has produced from his early sculptures to his most recent books, television programmes and the exhibitions he has curated. He draws upon many sources to pull the story together and has the ability to focus on intricate details, while still being able to present the bigger picture in an accessible way.

Mae’r byd a ddangosir gan Peter Lord drwy ei arddangosfeydd yn un o ddirgelwch, myth, hanes a rhith yn seiliedig ar ei synnwyr greddfol o chwilfrydedd. Bydd yn cyfeirio at themâu crefyddol, agor beddrodau, y Tarot, cyfnodau’r lleuad a delweddaeth Geltaidd, yn ogystal â sylwedd breuddwydion.
Mae llawer o’i ddarnau cerfluniol yn archwilio’r tu allan i wrthrych a’i du mewn cuddiedig. Mae’r bocsys, y llyfrau sydd wedi’u gwneud â llaw, y temlau a’r triptychau i gyd â chyfrinachau o’u mewn, ond nid yr hyn y byddech yn ei ddisgwyl ydyn nhw bob amser Mae llyfr du sydd, o’r tu allan, yn edrych fel Beibl teuluol mawr y byddech yn disgwyl iddo amgáu testunau cysurol, yn agor i ddatgelu ‘montages’ sy’n darlunio anobaith y cyflwr dynol. Mae temlau â drychau a goleuadau o’u mewn i greu’r rhith fod y tu mewn yn fwy na’r tu allan. Mae droriau cuddiedig a chaeadau cudd yn agor i ddatgelu eu trysorau yn debyg iawn i feddrod Tutankhamun, a agorwyd yn y ’20au a chistiau mortiwari Winchester, a agorwyd yn y 2010au.
Mae trywydd y naratif wedi bod yn bwysig i Peter Lord erioed ac mae’n rhedeg drwy’r holl waith a gynhyrchwyd ganddo o’i gerfluniau cynnar i’w lyfrau diweddaraf, ei raglenni teledu a’r arddangosfeydd lle’r oedd yn guradur. Bydd yn tynnu ar lawer o ffynonellau i ddod â’r stori at ei gilydd ac mae â’r gallu i ganolbwyntio ar fanylion cymhleth, a’r un pryd yn dal i allu cyflwyno’r darlun mwy mewn ffordd hygyrch.
