….Nicky Armstrong, known professionally as Nicky Prosser, was born in 1971 in Burnley in Lancashire. She moved to Wrexham in 1994 to take up a place on the BA Architectural Glass course at NEWI (North East Wales Institute) where she also completed an MA in Applied Arts (2000–2002).

Her work focussed on her formative years in the North West of England where she developed an interest in the stories surrounding women’s experiences of working in the textile industry. This body of work investigates some of those stories, the everyday objects associated with cotton production – shuttles, bobbins and thread and the items created through the trade. These, gloves and particularly the ‘pinnies’ series, given poignancy through the titles – ‘Sylvia’s Pinny’ and ‘Rita’s Pinny.’

She was an active exhibiting artist and educator, teaching at Mid Cheshire College, Yale College and NEWI. A member of NEWAN (North East Wales Artist Network) she exhibited in many group shows with them during 2001–2006 and increasingly solo exhibitions in Wales. Her MA had allowed her the creative space to develop a body of work related to research around how to embed everyday objects, in this case textiles, into hot glass. Some of these remain intact while others are echoes of their previous form.

Nicky will be remembered by many as the gallery coordinator at Wrexham Arts Centre where she was responsible for programming applied arts. She left Wrexham and relocated to Formby where she took up a post with Tate Liverpool before her untimely death in 2017.

Ganed Nicky Armstrong, a oedd yn cael ei hadnabod wrth ei henw proffesiynol Nicky Prosser, ym 1971 yn Burnley, Swydd Gaerhirfryn. Symudodd i Wrecsam ym 1994 i ddilyn cwrs BA mewn Gwydr Pensaernïol yn NEWI (Athrofa Gogledd-ddwyrain Cymru) lle cwblhaodd MA mewn Celfyddydau Cymhwysol (2000–2002) hefyd.

Roedd ei gwaith yn canolbwyntio ar ei blynyddoedd ffurfiannol yng ngogledd-orllewin Lloegr lle ymddiddorodd yn y straeon ynghylch profiadau merched o weithio yn y diwydiant tecstilau. Mae’r corff hwn o waith yn mynd i’r afael â rhai o’r hanesion hynny, y gwrthrychau bob dydd sy’n ymwneud â chynhyrchu cotwm – gwenoliaid, bobiniau ac edafedd – a’r eitemau a grëwyd drwy’r fasnach. Mae dwyster arbennig i’r rhain, y menig a’r gyfres ffedogau ‘pinnies’ yn enwedig, drwy deitlau fel ‘Sylvia’s Pinny’ a ‘Rita’s Pinny.’

Roedd hi’n artist gweithredol a arddangosai ei gwaith a hefyd yn addysgwr, gan ddysgu yn y Mid Cheshire College, Coleg Iâl a NEWI. Fel aelod o NEWAN (Rhwydwaith Artistiaid Gogledd-ddwyrain Cymru) arddangosodd gyda nhw mewn sioeau grŵp niferus yn ystod 2001–2006 a chynnal sioeau unigol yn gynyddol yng Nghymru. Roedd ei MA yn rhoi’r gofod creadigol iddi ddatblygu corff o waith yn ymwneud ag ymchwil i sut mae ymgorffori gwrthrychau bob dydd – tecstilau yn yr achos hwn – mewn gwydr poeth. Tra bod rhai o’r rhain wedi aros mewn un darn mae eraill yn adleisiau o’u ffurfiau blaenorol.
