A series of craft work in focus from Welsh ceramic makers

Series curation: Wendy Lawrence

Peter Bodenham trained in Ceramics in the mid 1980s at Camberwell School of Art. In the mid 1990s he completed an MA in Fine Art at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Peter lives near Cardigan in west Wales, where he runs St.Dogmaels Pottery. In 2011 he was the Gold Medal winner for Craft and Design at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Underpinning Peter’s ceramic work is a research based practice exploring his locality, sense of place and the materiality of clay and glaze.

The ceramic wall vessels, shelves and pots were made in response to his local beach environment and the flotsam & jetsam found along the shoreline. His work playfully explores the tension between function, utility and fine art practice. Peter’s creative practice flows between undertaking beach cleans, studying the history, geology, botany, ecology of the coastal environment and then making ceramic utilitarian pots and sculptural vessels in response to his home environment. The use of local clays, motifs, gestural marks brushed or scratched into the surface of the pots can be seen as direct traces of his phenomenological experience of a site and place. The ceramic vessels represent both the beauty and pernicious nature of ocean plastic we find along our shores through the language of abstraction and clay.

Cyfres o waith crefft mewn ffocws gan wneuthurwyr serameg Cymreig
Curadur y gyfres: Wendy Lawrence

Hyfforddwyd Peter Bodenham mewn Cerameg yn Ysgol Gelf Camberwell yng nghanol y 1980au. Cwblhaodd gradd MA mewn Celfyddyd Gain ym Mhrifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd yng nghanol y 1990au. Mae Peter yn byw ger Aberteifi, lle mae’n rhedeg Crochendy Llandudoch. Enillodd y Fedal Aur am Grefft a Dylunio yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn 2011. Wrth wraidd gwaith cerameg Peter mae ymarfer wedi’i seilio ar ymchwil sy’n edrych ar ei fro, yr ymdeimlad o le a materoldeb clai a gwydredd.

Gwnaed y llestri wal, silffoedd a photiau cerameg mewn ymateb i amgylchedd ei draeth lleol ynghyd â’r broc môr sydd i’w canfod ar hyd y lan. Mae ei waith yn archwilio’n chwareus y tyndra hwnnw rhwng swyddogaeth, defnyddioldeb ac ymarfer celfyddyd gain. Mae ymarfer creadigol Peter yn llifo rhwng ymgymryd â glanhau’r traeth, astudio hanes, daeareg, botaneg ac ecoleg amgylchedd y glannau ac yna mae’n creu potiau cerameg at ddefnydd a llestri cerfluniol mewn ymateb i amgylchfyd ei gartref. Gellir ystyried y defnydd o gleiau lleol, motiffau, marciau amneidiol wedi’u brwsio neu grafu ar wyneb y potiau yn olion uniongyrchol o’i brofiad ffenomenolegol o leoliad. Drwy ieithwedd haniaeth a chlai mae’r llestri cerameg yn cynrychioli harddwch a natur niweidiol plastig y cefnfor rydym yn ei ganfod ar hyd ein glannau.

Mae’r gweithiau ar gael i’w prynu.

“Mick Casson possessed the greatest gift: he inspired other people with confidence in themselves. He understood first hand the exigencies of making a living as a potter so his advice was always down-to-earth and realistic – and often punctuated by a wicked wit! He once told me that the pots we make express what we are or what we would like to be. Mick’s pots are intelligent and generous and life affirming.” Jane Hamlyn. Walter Keeler..Walter Keeler
from £5.00

....
‘Walter Keeler makes ambitious, intelligent functional pots. These qualities stem from his passion for history, for craft and for stories told through everyday things. As a child he unearthed broken pots on the banks of the Thames and was fascinated to learn how they were made and used.

As a student and teacher during the early sixties, he found himself at the heart of the emerging and vibrant studio pottery movement. Today, with over forty years of making and teaching to his name, he continues to delight us with his distinctive approach to salt and earthenware glazes, which clothe the pots in tactile and tempting colours and textures.

His work can be found in museum collections around the world, as well as our kitchens and dining rooms. For many, Walter Keeler’s pots represent the very best in contemporary studio pottery, combining the skills of a craftsperson with an individual voice’. Julia Pitts. Essays by Emmanuel Cooper and Amanda Fielding.

‘Mae Walter Keeler yn gwneud potiau defnyddiol, uchelgeisiol a synhwyrol. Dyma ansoddau sy’n tarddu o’i angerdd tuag at hanes, am grefft ac am storïau’n cael eu hadrodd drwy bethau bob dydd. Fel plentyn arferai durio am ddarnau o hen botiau ar lannau’r Tafwys, wrth ei fodd yn dysgu sut oeddynt yn cael eu gwneud a’u defnyddio.

Fel myfyriwr ac athro yn ystod y chwedegau cynnar, cafodd ei hun ynghanol y symudiad crochenwaith stiwdio bywiog oedd yn datblygu. Heddiw, gyda deugain mlynedd a mwy o wneud a dysgu i’w enw, mae’n parhau i’n difyrru gyda’i ymdriniaeth nodedig o wydreddau halen a phriddwaith, yn gorchuddio’r potiau mewn lliwiau a gweuad dengar a chyffyrddadwy.

Gellir canfod ei waith mewn casgliadau amgueddfaol dros y byd, yn ogystal â’n ceginau a’n stafelloedd byw ni. I lawer mae potiau Walter Keeler yn cynrychioli’r gorau bosib mewn crochenwaith stiwdio cyfoes, gan gyfuno sgiliau crefftwr gyda llais unigol’. Julia Pitts.
