A new series of craft work in focus from Welsh ceramic makers
Series curation: Wendy Lawrence
Robyn Cove gained her BA(hons) in Ceramics from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2008. She has been making ceramics ever since, displaying her work in exhibitions, galleries, ceramic shows and retail locations throughout the UK and internationally. During this time has lived in South West Scotland, the Isle of Skye, Yorkshire, and is now based back in Cardiff. Her pottery captures a rustic warmth with full forms and contemporary surface designs.
“My wheel thrown pottery is made with usability in mind. These pots are made from a blend of stoneware clay and decorated with free, often quickly applied brushwork. The shapes are carefully thought out so that they fit well in the hands and hopefully can become an extension of the user’s own body. They can often seem very traditional in ways.
I also make larger hand built pots that are strongly inspired by Korean forms and both Chinese and a British decoration. Most of these pieces are made so they could function as vases, although they also sit well unadorned. I build these with the coil and pinch method then I thin the walls out with a paddle. I like the slowness of this process and the resulting pots have great character, they are imperfect, they have marks and scores from my hands and the tools I’ve used.
My work takes inspiration from many sources; most apparent are Japanese, Korean and British studio pottery, the most direct influence is from my own use of handmade pottery at home which include Hamada, Leach and Cardew pieces alongside current makers pots in both slipped earthenware and stoneware.”

Cyfres newydd o waith crefft mewn ffocws gan wneuthurwyr serameg Cymreig
Curadur y gyfres: Wendy Lawrence
Cafodd Robyn Cove ei BA (anrh) mewn Serameg gan Brifysgol Fetropolitan Caerdydd yn 2008. Bu’n gwneud serameg byth ers hynny, yn arddangos ei gwaith mewn arddangosfeydd, orielau, sioeau serameg a lleoliadau adwerthu ledled y DU ac yn rhyngwladol. Yn ystod yr amser hwn mae wedi byw yn Ne Orllewin yr Alban, Ynys Skye, Swydd Efrog, ac y mae’n awr yn ôl yng Nghaerdydd. Mae ei chrochenwaith yn cipio cynhesrwydd gwladaidd gyda ffurfiau llawn a dyluniadau arwyneb cyfoes.
“Gwneir fy nghrochenwaith i a lunnir ar droell gyda defnyddioldeb dan sylw. Gwneir y potiau hyn o flend o glai crochenwaith caled a’u haddurno â brwshwaith a daenir yn gyflym yn aml. Rhoddir ystyriaeth ofalus i’r siapiau fel eu bod yn ffitio’n dda yn y dwylo gyda’r gobaith y gallan nhw ddod yn estyniad i gorff y defnyddiwr ei hun. Gallant ymddangos yn draddodiadol iawn mewn llawer ffordd.
Byddaf hefyd yn gwneud potiau mwy wedi’u llunio â llaw ac wedi’u hysbrydoli i raddau helaeth gan ffurfiau Koreaidd ac addurniad Tsieineaidd a Phrydeinig. Gwneir y rhan fwyaf o’r darnau hyn er mwyn gallu eu defnyddio fel fasau, er y byddan nhw’n addas hefyd heb eu haddurno. Byddaf yn llunio’r rhain â’r dull coil a phinsio. Yna byddaf yn teneuo’r waliau â phadl. Rwy’n hoff o arafwch y broses hon a bydd y potiau canlyniadol â chymeriad enfawr, maen nhw’n amherffaith, maen nhw â marciau a rhiciau gan fy nwylo i a’r offer a ddefnyddiwyd gen i.
Daw’r ysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer fy ngwaith i o lawer o ffynonellau; y mwyaf amlwg yw crochenwaith stiwdio Japaneaidd, Koreaidd a Phrydeinig. Daw’r dylanwad mwyaf amlwg o fy nefnydd i fy hun o grochenwaith wedi’i wneud â llaw gartref sy’n cynnwys darnau Hamada, Leach a Cardew ynghyd â photiau gwneuthurwyr cyfredol mewn crochenwaith slip a chrochenwaith caled.”
