A new series of crafted fine art by north Wales artists

Dave Roberts is a self-taught pastel artist who specialises in painting the landscapes of North Wales. He was born in Aberystwyth and now lives in Caerwys, Flintshire. He became a full-time professional artist in 2018.
His work is the antithesis of how most people would imagine a pastel painting to be; it is detailed, vivid and full of deep contrasts. Commentators enjoy the photorealistic qualities of some pieces.
Dave will often be found in the mountains at dawn or dusk as these are the best times to capture that moment “in between” day and night when the light creates the drama that is such an important aspect of his paintings. As Dave explains, few experiences are as ethereal or elemental as being alone in the mountains at twilight.
Pastels are Dave’s chosen medium because of their immediacy. There are no rules to follow and there is no pre-mixing or waiting for paints to dry. This means that the creative process is entirely uninhibited.

Artist pastelau hunanddysgedig yw Dave Roberts sy’n arbenigo mewn arlunio tirwedd Gogledd Cymru. Fe’i ganwyd yn Aberystwyth ac mae’n byw yn awr yng Nghaerwys, Sir y Fflint. Daeth yn artist proffesiynol llawn-amser yn 2018.
Mae ei waith yn antithesis o’r ffordd y byddai’r rhan fwyaf o bobl yn dychmygu beth yw paentiad pastel; mae’n fanwl, yn fyw ac yn llawn o gyferbyniadau dwfn. Bydd sylwebyddion yn mwynhau priodweddau ffotorealistig rhai darnau.
Deuir o hyd i Dave yn y mynyddoedd yn aml, gyda’r wawr neu yn y cyfnos gan mai dyma’r amseroedd gorau i gipio’r ennyd honno ‘rhwng’ dydd a nos pan fydd y golau’n creu’r ddrama sy’n agwedd mor bwysig ar ei baentiadau. Fel yr esbonia Dave, prin yw’r profiadau sydd mor nefolaidd neu elfennol â bod ar eich pen eich hun yn y mynyddoedd yn y cyfnos.
Pastelau yw cyfrwng dewisol Dave oherwydd eu huniongyrchedd. Nid oes unrhyw reolau i’w dilyn a dim cymysgu ymlaen llaw nac aros i baentiau sychu. Golyga hyn nad oes yna unrhyw ataliad ar y broses greadigol.
