Anne Kelly is, quite literally, well travelled. Before the pandemic she travelled all over the world: to teach, exhibit, to see family and for play. Her textile work has long been characterised by travel: travel in the sense of trains, boats and planes. But also travel in the sense of personal journeys over time and through history. When she can travel, Anne derives immense joy and inspiration from new places and new people. She keeps many sketchbooks, wherein she collects bits and pieces, images and ideas. But when making her work she likes to start with a piece of fabric – even a scrap – and build on that.
Anne is a collector (if not a hoarder) of textile related flotsam and jetsam. But she also collects memories; of places she has visited in person, of course. But also places and scenes she has visited in exhibitions, in books and films. Anne’s work reminds us that the mind keeps travelling, regardless of what our bodies are doing. In Well Travelled she shows us so many ways of celebrating her and our memories of travel, past and future. It is an intricate, rich and beautiful journey celebrating textiles, travelling, memories and making.

Mae Anne Kelly, yn eithaf llythrennol, yn un sydd wedi teithio’n eang. Cyn y pandemig roedd yn teithio ledled y byd: i ddysgu, arddangos, i weld teulu ac i chwarae. Mae ei gwaith tecstilau wedi’i nodweddu ers amser gan deithio: teithio o ran trenau, cychod ac awyrennau. Ond teithio hefyd o ran siwrneiau personol dros amser a thrwy hanes. Pan fydd hi’n gallu teithio, bydd Ann yn profi llawenydd enfawr ac ysbrydoliaeth gan leoedd newydd a phobl newydd. Bydd yn cadw llawer o lyfrau braslunio lle bydd yn casglu darnau a thameidiau, delweddau a syniadau. Ond pan fydd yn gwneud ei gwaith bydd yn hoff o ddechrau â darn o ffabrig – sgrap hyd yn oed – ac adeiladu ar hynny.
Mae Anne yn gasglwr (os nad yn gleciwr) broc môr sy’n berthynol i decstilau. Ond mae hefyd yn casglu atgofion; o leoedd y bydd wedi ymweld â nhw’n bersonol, wrth gwrs. Ond hefyd lleodd a golygfeydd y bydd wedi ymweld â nhw mewn arddangosfeydd, mewn llyfrau a ffilmiau. Bydd gwaith Anne yn ein hatgoffa y bydd y meddwl yn parhau i deithio, waeth beth fydd ein cyrff yn ei wneud. Yn Wedi Gweld y Byd mae’n dangos i ni gymaint o ffyrdd o ddathlu ein hatgofion ni a hithau o deithio, yn y gorffennol a’r dyfodol. Mae’n daith gymhleth, gyfoethog a hardd sy’n dathlu tecstilau, teithio, atgofion a gwneud.
