Ruth Duckworth is a modernist sculptor who works in several mediums. Her forms are typically created in bronze, porcelain, or stoneware. Her sculptures and monumental works are mostly untitled but she is best known for the wall sculpture Clouds Over Lake Michigan. Duckworth’s work is in public collections worldwide including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles Country Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum to name a few.
She was exposed to the minimalist aesthetic of Henry Moore and Isamu Noguchi, whose influences remain in her work today. The friendly triumvirate of Duckworth, Hans Coper and Lucie Rie and their adoption of European modernist challenged the reigning taste of Bernard Leach and the Anglo-Oriental tradition in ceramics. Since moving to Chicago, her reputation as a proponent of Organic Abstraction has grown internationally. In 2005, at 86 years of age, her retrospective toured across the United States to seven different museum exhibitions. In 2009, at 90 years of age, she is still creating and working in her studio.

Y mae ei gwaith yn cael ei wneud mewn pres, porslen neu grochenwaith caled ac fel arfer y mae ei cherfluniau a’i chofebau yn ddienw ond y mae hi’n fwyaf enwog am ei mur-gerflun Cymylau dros Lyn Michigan. Gwelir ei gwaith mewn myrdd o gasgliadau cyhoeddus yn cynnwys Sefydliad Celf Chicago, Amgueddfa Los Angeles, Amgueddfa Victoria ac Albert, Amgueddfa Stedelijk ac Amgueddfa’r Metropolitan i enwi dim ond rhai.
Yn ei dyddiau cynnar daeth wyneb yn wyneb â gwaith esthetig minimalaidd Henry Moore ac Isamu Noguchi ac fe welir eu dylanwad arni hyd heddiw. Heriwyd chwaeth bwerus Bernard Leach a’r traddodiad serameg Eingl-Ddwyreiniol gan y triawd cyfeillgar Duckworth, Hans Coper a Lucie Rie pan fabwysiadwyd arddull fodernaidd Ewropeaidd ganddynt. Ers pan fudodd i Chicago daeth Ruth yn enwog yn rhyngwladol oherwydd ei hymlyniad wrth Haniaeth Organig. Yn 2005, yn 86 oed, aeth ar daith ar draws yr Unol Daleithiau i arddangos mewn saith o wahanol amgueddfeydd. Yn 2009, yn 90 oed, y mae hi’n dal i greu a gweithio yn ei stiwdio.
