Angus Suttie’s allusive, energetic, hand-built ceramics were powerful contributors to the postmodern art of the 1980s. Although his work sometimes has an ironic and even playful edge, he was deeply thoughtful about its humanist intentions, and the references are present not just for play, but for critical, sometimes political provocation. Suttie could use the conventional form of the teapot, transform it through innovative, complex and entirely unexpected shapes, and reflect on deeper themes of death or sexual expression. He said that he wanted to make pots ‘that shock us, console us, that are life-affirming or that haunt us’. He was a visionary for ceramic art.

Roedd serameg egnïol, gwibiog Angus Suttie a oedd wedi’u llunio â llaw, yn gyfranwyr pwerus i gelfyddyd ôl-fodern yr ’80au. Er bod ei waith weithiau â min eironig a chwareus, hyd yn oed, roedd yn hynod feddylgar o’i fwriad dyneiddiol, ac mae’r cyfeiriadau’n bresennol nid dim ond ar gyfer chwarae, ond er mwyn cythrudd beirniadol, weithiau’n wleidyddol. Gallai Suttie ddefnyddio ffurf gonfensiynol y tebot, ei drawsnewid drwy siapiau arloesol, cymhleth a chwbl annisgwyl, ac adlewyrchu ar themâu dyfnach marwolaeth neu fynegiant rhywiol. Dywedodd fod arno eisiau gwneud potiau ‘sy’n rhoi sioc i ni, yn ein cythruddo, ein cysuro, sy’n datgan bywyd neu’n ein cyniwair’. Roedd yn weledydd celfyddyd serameg.
