A series of craft work in focus from Welsh ceramic makers

Originally from Dolgellau in Gwynedd, Elin graduated from the BA Ceramics degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2019. Since then she has exhibited in multiple showcases across the UK, including the Cynthia Corbett Gallery’s Young Masters Art Prize (2019), Collect Art Fair in London (2023) and at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, where she received their Young Artist Scholarship (2022). In 2023 she was awarded a ‘Create’ grant from the Arts Council of Wales to undertake an 18 month apprenticeship with wood-firing potter Simon Levin in Illinois, USA. This collection of vessels documents work from her final months in the States. Thunder Train | Trên Taranau
‘With wood as the sole source of fuel, these pots showcase the transformational potential of fire to create rich and enigmatic surface effects.The lengthy firing process involves days of teamwork and cooperation with other makers, leading to new friendships, sharing of experiences and storytelling. This selection of work begins to capture some of the warmth of this shared communal experience.’

Yn wreiddiol o Ddolgellau, graddiodd Elin o Brifysgol Fetropolitan Caerdydd yn 2019 gyda BA Cerameg. Ers hynny mae hi wedi arddangos ar lwyfannau niferus yn y DG, gan gynnwys Gwobr Gelfyddyd Meistr Ifanc y Cynthia Corbett Gallery (2019), Ffair Gelfyddyd Collect yn Llundain (2023) ac yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru pan enillodd yr Ysgoloriaeth Artist Ifanc (2022). ‘Walter Keeler makes ambitious, intelligent functional pots. These qualities stem from his passion for history, for craft and for stories told through everyday things. As a child he unearthed broken pots on the banks of the Thames and was fascinated to learn how they were made and used.
As a student and teacher during the early sixties, he found himself at the heart of the emerging and vibrant studio pottery movement. Today, with over forty years of making and teaching to his name, he continues to delight us with his distinctive approach to salt and earthenware glazes, which clothe the pots in tactile and tempting colours and textures.
His work can be found in museum collections around the world, as well as our kitchens and dining rooms. For many, Walter Keeler’s pots represent the very best in contemporary studio pottery, combining the skills of a craftsperson with an individual voice’. Julia Pitts.
