For centuries the High Street has been at the heart of every community. Formed by shopfronts, buildings and pavements that line a main road, the High Street is the centre around which a village, town or city takes shape. It’s where place is born.
High Streets are more than shops and street furniture, they form a sensory backdrop to people’s lives. New work by textile artist Hâf Weighton interprets the many faces, surfaces and meanings of the High Street in Wales through paint, stitch, print and film.
“The fabric pieces within ‘High Street’ aren’t literal or geographically exact. They’re imagined spaces – intuitively pieced together from remembered shopfronts, everyday textures and real walks up and down the High Streets of Wales. I hope everyone who sees the work will make their own connections, jogging memories and kick-starting stories.” Hâf Weighton
Known for her textile representations of buildings, in this exhibition Hâf Weighton widens the scope of her work, with many pieces being large in scale and intricately stitched and layered to reflect the depth of meaning behind facades, brickwork and doorways. The layers of history surface in art of depth and dynamism, stimulating the senses to evoke memories of the past and concerns about the future.
Curated by Gregory Parsons
A program of educational workshops, talks and events will accompany this exhibition.

Am ganrifoedd bu’r Stryd Fawr yng nghanol pob cymuned. Wedi’i ffurfio gan wynebau siopau, adeiladau a choridiroedd sy’n arwain pob prif ffordd, mae’r Stryd Fawr yn ganolbwynt lle mae pentref, tref neu ddinas yn cymryd siâp. Dyma ble mae lle yn cael ei eni.
Mae Strydoedd Fawr yn fwy na siopau a dodrefn stryd, maent yn ffurfio cefndir synhwyraidd i fywydau pobl. Mae gwaith newydd gan yr artist tecstiliau Hâf Weighton yn dehongli wynebau, arwynebau ac ystyron lluosog y Stryd Fawr yng Nghymru drwy baentio, pwyntio, argraffu a ffilm.
“Nid yw’r darnau ffabrig o fewn ‘Y Stryd Fawr’ yn llythrennol nac yn union yn ddaearyddol. Maent yn gyfryngau dychmygol – wedi’u gosod yn reddfol o edrych ar wynebau blaen siopau, gweadau bob dydd a mynd am dro i fyny a i lawr Strydoedd Fawr Cymru. Gobeithiaf y bydd pawb sy’n gweld y gwaith yn creu eu cysylltiadau eu hunain, gan atgyfnerthu atgofion a dechrau straeon.” Hâf Weighton
Mae Hâf Weighton yn adnabyddus am ei chynrychiolaethau tecstiliau o adeiladau. Yn yr arddangosfa hon mae Hâf Weighton yn ehangu graddfa ei gwaith, gyda llawer o ddarnau'n enfawr mewn maint ac wedi'u gwnïo ambell haean o ddefnydd yn fanwl at ei gilydd i adlewyrchu dyfnder ystyr tu ôl i gwaith brics a drysau adeiladau. Mae haenau hanes yn dod i'r amlwg mewn celf o ddyfnder a deinameg, gan ysgogi'r synhwyrau i atgoffa cof am y gorffennol ac ystyried pryderon am y dyfodol.
Wedi’u guriadu gan Gregory Parsons.
Bydd rhaglen o weithdai addysgol, sgwrsio a digwyddiadau yn cyd-fynd â'r arddangosfa hon.
