Lettering : Art & Illusion depicts lettering that is created by hand through calligraphy, letter cutting, painting and engraving. Writing is a most ancient art form and for millennia the art of the scribe was held in great esteem. The professional scribe in Arabic, Japanese, Tibetan and Egyptian scripts, as well as what we would now consider a western hand, proffered the foundations of formal languages as we know them today; from pictograms and hieroglyphics to italic and copperplate scripts, realised in stone, glass and metal and on parchment, vellum and paper. Through the work of the selected artists and makers, we can study the techniques, ancient in their origins, yet timelessly original in their expression, created with contemporary style and sensitivity.

Llythreniad : Mae Celfyddyd a Rhith yn darlunio llythreniad a grëir â llaw drwy galigraffi, torri llythrennau, paentio ac engrafu. Mae ysgrifennu’n ffurf fwyaf hynafol ar gelfyddyd ac am filenia fe ystyrid celfyddyd y sgrifellwr ag edmygedd mawr. Byddai’r sgrifellwr proffesiynol mewn sgriptiau Arabeg,iaith Japan, Tibeteg a’r Aifft, yn ogystal â’r hyn y byddem ni’n awr yn ei ystyried yn ysgrifen orllewinol, yn cynnig sylfaeni ieithoedd ffurfiol fel yr ydym ni’n eu hadnabod heddiw; o bictogramau a hiroglyffigau i sgriptiau italig ac ysgythriad copr, wedi’u cyflawni mewn carreg, gwydr a metel a memrwn, felwm a phapur. Drwy waith yr artistiaid a’r gwneuthurwyr dewisol, gallwn astudio’r dulliau, hynafol yn eu tarddiadau, eto’n ddiamser wreiddiol yn eu mynegiant, wedi’u creu ag arddull a sensitifrwydd cyfoes.
