Enamel I Substrate
John Grayson’s career in making spans some thirty years: his practice is rooted in a fascination for exploring the creative value of processes employed by defunct Midland metal working ‘toy’ trades and a passion for satirical story telling through object making.
Enamel | Substrate is the culmination of John’s practice-based PhD investigating the [lost] craftsmanship employed in the 18th century South Staffordshire enamel trade.
This exhibition encapsulates the research method, the journey of enquiry and its findings. It presents: examples of the method of analysis of museum objects – analytical drawing, photographs and video – that reveal hitherto unknown construction; samples from contemporary craft making – material experiments, sketch-books and John’s contemporary craftwork – that formed the method to both investigate, understand, and demonstrate the creative value of the 18th century craft processes.

Mae gyrfa John Grayson mewn gwneud yn rhychwantu tua deng mlynedd ar hugain: mae ei arfer wedi’i wreiddio mewn cyfaredd tuag at archwilio gwerth creadigol y prosesau a ddefnyddir gan fasnach ‘teganau’ gweithio metel marw’r Midlands a brwdfrydedd o ran dweud straeon dychanol drwy wneud gwrthrychau.
Mae Enamel | Is-haen yn ddiweddglo PhD John sy’n seiliedig ar arfer yn ymchwilio’r grefftwriaeth [golledig] a ddefnyddiwyd ym masnach enamel De Swydd Stafford yn y 18fed ganrif.
Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn mewngapsiwleiddio’r dull ymchwil, y daith o ymholi a’i darganfyddiadau. Mae’n cyflwyno: enghreifftiau o ddull dadansoddi gwrthrychau amgueddfa – darlunio dadansoddol, ffotograffau a fideo – sy’n datgelu lluniad sy’n anhysbys hyd yn hyn; enghreifftiau o wneud crefftau cyfoes – arbrofion deunydd, llyfrau braslunio a chrefftwaith cyfoes John – a ffurfiodd y dull i ymchwilio, deall a dangos gwerth creadigol prosesau crefft y 18fed ganrif.
