10.00am - 4.00pm

This group masterclass focuses on Jessie’s signature style of hand embroidered illustration. Under Jessie’s guidance, you will be mark making and playing intuitively with a mix of new and vintage threads and a selection of new and time worn fabrics.

Jessie will help you get started with a variety of appliqué techniques, which she encourages you to use as a form of drawing. You will also explore several embroidery stitches including satin, running, seed, cross and couching. Incorporating found objects and personal ephemera into your embroidery is another exciting part of this class. For example, Jessie will show you how a pearl button may become the centre of a flower, or a piece of blue silk ribbon a detail in a densely stitched sky.

At the start of your class Jessie will walk and talk you through a selection of her original artworks, which will be on display as part of her solo exhibition at Ruthin Craft Centre. Once back to the studio Jessie will advise you, both as a group and individually, as you embark on your personal journey of creating your own stitched story or drawing. Please note that your work does not have to be narrative based, nor does it have to be finished by the end of the class. Jessie suggests you approach this day as an explorative and peaceful slow-stitching experience inspired by her artworks and materials. For instance, you might like to focus on making a creative stitch sampler. This approach can free up one’s mind and spark fresh ideas in preparation for future stitching projects.

You will be working directly onto a piece of natural fabric. This base fabric is included in the kit provided at the start of the class. Your kit also contains a selection of pre-cut fabric motifs designed by Jessie ready for you to appliqué directly onto your work, plus a printed stitch guide for you to take home.

If you would like to work with a more personal base fabric, then vintage tablecloths, linen napkins, or a time worn garment are all perfect. Clothing can be unpicked and then pieced back together later if necessary to create a unique canvas on which to experiment. Perhaps you have something tucked away that belonged to a beloved family member or friend? Jessie suggests bringing items made solely from natural fabrics (cotton, linen or silk), as they are easier to embellish.

Take a look at Jessie’s suggested materials list, and gather together a few items of personal inspiration in advance of your class.

Jessie’s Suggested Materials List

You will be provided with a handcrafted kit at the start of your masterclass, which

includes the use of my specialist embroidery threads. However, I will always encourage you, the maker, to create your own ‘story’ as much as possible. To do this, I suggest that you bring along a selection of items from the list below. These can then be incorporated into your work, making it even more personal:

  • an assortment of your favourite embroidery threads

  • an assortment of your favourite fabric scraps

  • a cherished vintage piece of plain linen/cotton, if you would like to work with a more personal base fabric – vintage tablecloths, tray cloths, hankies and linen napkins are all perfect material

  • other items of personal interest, such as old charms, buttons, vintage lace and ribbons, small keys etc, all of which can be stitched into your work

  • a favourite drawing, poem, quote or perhaps just a single word (for inspiration)

  • anything you are currently working on that you’d like to show me and share with your class

10.00am - 4.00pm

Mae’r grŵp dosbarth meistr hwn yn canolbwyntio ar arddull arbennig Jessie o ddarlunio drwy frodio â llaw. Dan arweiniad Jessie byddwch yn creu marciau ac yn chwarae’n reddfol gyda chymysgedd o edafedd hen a newydd a detholiad o ffabrigau newydd a rhai wedi’u treulio dros amser.

Bydd Jessie’n eich helpu i roi cychwyn arni gydag amrywiaeth o dechnegau appliqué y mae’n eich annog chi i’w defnyddio fel ffurf o luniadu. Byddwch hefyd yn archwilio sawl pwyth brodio gan gynnwys pwythau satin, rhedeg, hedyn, croes a gorwedd. Mae ymgorffori petheuach wedi’u canfod ac effemera personol yn eich brodwaith yn rhan gyffrous arall o’r gweithdy hwn. Er enghraifft, bydd Jessie’n dangos sut y gall botwm perl fod yn ganol blodyn, neu ddarn o ruban sidan glas yn fanylyn mewn wybren wedi’i phwytho’n ddwys.

Ar ddechrau’r gweithdy bydd Jessie yn eich tywys ac yn trafod detholiad o’i gweithiau celf gwreiddiol a fydd i’w gweld yn rhan o’i harddangosfa unigol yng Nghanolfan Grefft Rhuthun. Yna, yn ôl yn y stiwdio bydd Jessie yn eich cynghori, fel grŵp ac yn unigol hefyd wrth i chi ymgymryd â siwrnai bersonol o greu eich stori neu luniad wedi’i bwytho. Nodwch, os gwelwch yn dda, nid oes angen i’ch gwaith fod yn seiliedig ar naratif neu wedi’i gwblhau cyn diwedd y gweithdy,. Mae Jessie’n awgrymu eich bod yn ystyried y diwrnod hwn yn brofiad o bwytho araf, archwiliol a thawel wedi’i ysbrydoli gan ei gwaith celf a’r defnyddiau. Er enghraifft, efallai yr hoffech chi ganolbwyntio ar greu sampler o bwythau. Gall y ffordd hon o fynd ati ryddhau’r meddwl a thanio syniadau newydd ar gyfer paratoi prosiectau pwytho yn y dyfodol.

Byddwch yn gweithio’n uniongyrchol ar ddarn o ffabrig naturiol. Caiff y ffabrig sail ei gynnwys yn y pecyn a ddarparwyd ar ddechrau’r gweithdy. Mae eich pecyn yn cynnwys detholiad o fotiffau wedi’u dylunio gan Jessie ac wedi’u torri eisoes, yn barod i chi eu gosod yn uniongyrchol ar eich gwaith, ynghyd â chanllaw pwytho wedi’i argraffu i chi fynd adref gyda chi.

Os hoffech chi weithio gyda ffabrig sail mwy personol, mae hen lieiniau bwrdd, napcynnau llin, neu hen ddilledyn i gyd yn berffaith. Gall bwythau gael eu datod a’r dillad eu rhoi at ei gilydd eto yn hwyrach, os oes angen, er mwyn creu cynfas unigryw i arbrofi arno. Efallai bod rhywbeth gyda chi wedi’i roi o’r neilltu a oedd yn perthyn i aelod annwyl o’r teulu neu gyfaill hoff? Mae Jessie’n awgrymu eich bod yn dod ag eitemau wedi’u gwneud o ffabrigau naturiol (cotwm, llin neu sidan) yn unig gan eu bod yn haws i’w haddurno.

Cymerwch gipolwg ar y rhestr o ddefnyddiau mae Jessie’n eu hawgrymu a chesglwch ynghyd rai eitemau sy’n eich ysbrydoli chi’n bersonol cyn y gweithdy.

Rhestr Ddefnyddiau yr awgrymir gan Jessie

Darperir pecyn o waith llaw i chi ar ddechrau’r dosbarth meistr, sy’n cynnwys fy edafedd brodio arbenigol. Fodd bynnag, byddaf yn eich annog chi, y gwneuthurwr, bob amser i greu eich ‘stori’ eich hun cymaint â phosibl. I wneud hyn rwy’n awgrymu eich bod yn dod â detholiad o’r eitemau sydd ar y rhestr isod. Gall y rhain gael eu hymgorffori yn eich gwaith, gan ei wneud yn fwy personol fyth.

  • amrywiaeth o’ch hoff edafedd brodio

  • amrywiaeth o’ch hoff ddarnau ffabrig

  • hen ddarn hoff o liain neu gotwm, os hoffech chi weithio gyda ffabrig sail mwy personol – mae hen lieiniau bwrdd, llieiniau hambwrdd, hancesi a napcynnau llin i gyd yn ddefnyddiau perffaith.

  • eitemau eraill o ddiddordeb personol, megis hen swyndlysau, botymau, hen les a rhubanau, allweddi bychan ayyb. Gall y cyfan gael eu pwytho i mewn i’ch gwaith.

  • hoff ddarlun, cerdd, dyfyniad neu hyd yn oed un gair (ar gyfer ysbrydoliaeth)

  • unrhyw beth rydych yn gweithio arni ar hyn o bryd yr hoffech ddangos i mi neu’i rannu gyda’r dosbarth
