In August 1967 the acclaimed British author, Alan Garner OBE, published the classic children’s book The Owl Service. The story revolves around the ancient tale of Blodeuwedd, from the Welsh chronicles of mythology The Mabinogion. In The Owl Service, this tragic story is replayed generation after generation, reliving the cursed love triangle that ensnared Blodeuwedd, Lleu and Gronw.

Photographer, David Heke, has been collaborating with Alan and Griselda Garner on a number of projects. Following a conversation around the kitchen table in their 15th-century farmhouse, about the forthcoming fiftieth anniversary of The Owl Service, the germ of the idea for this project was born.

Bringing together a multi-disciplinary group of artists from either side of the Welsh / English border, this collaboration explores and celebrates this ground-breaking story and its origins in Welsh myth.

The participating artists are Liz Ellis (sculpture), Jenny Ryrie (painting), David Heke (photography and video), Chris Tally Evans (music / soundscape), Bettina Langlois (fine art upholstery) and Anna Wigley (poetry and prose).

Yn Awst 1967 fe gyhoeddodd yr awdur Prydeinig cydnabyddedig, Alan Garner OBE, y llyfr plant sy’n glasur The Owl Service. Mae’r stori’n ymwneud â hanes hynafol Blodeuwedd, o’r croniclau mytholeg Cymreig Y Mabinogi. Yn The Owl Service, fe ailadroddir y stori drasig hon o genhedlaeth i genhedlaeth, gan ail-fyw’r triongl cariad melltigedig a hud-ddenai Blodeuwedd, Lleu a Gronw.

Mae’r ffotograffydd, David Heke, wedi bod yn cydweithio ag Alan a Griselda Garner ar nifer o brosiectau. Yn dilyn sgwrs rownd bwrdd y gegin yn eu ffermdy o’r 15fed ganrif, am hanner-canfed pen-blwydd The Owl Service sydd ar ddod, fe anwyd egin y syniad ar gyfer y prosiect hwn.

Mae’r cydweithio hwn, sy’n dod â grŵp amlddisgyblaeth o artistiaid o bob ochr i’r ffin Gymreig / Seisnig at ei gilydd, yn archwilio ac yn dathlu’r stori arloesol hon a’i tharddiad mewn mytholeg Gymreig.

Yr artistiaid sy’n cyfranogi yw Liz Ellis (cerfluniaeth), Jenny Ryrie (paentio), David Heke (ffotograffiaeth a fideo), Chris Tally Evans (miwsig / seinlun), Bettina Langlois (clustogwaith celfyddyd gain) ac Anna Wigley (barddoniaeth a rhyddiaith).
