This exhibition displays the work of Lisa Carter Grist & Graham Sutherland across both our CELF gallery rooms.

Sutherland was drawn to estuaries and hills, and Carter Grist likewise turns her back on the sea, preferring the dips of the river beds, dark ditches and hills with their archaeological traces. ‘Making is an experience of movement, of a material encounter which is at its most accurate when the work is most fluid.’

Mike Tooby writes about the conversation between the work of the two artists:

Lisa Carter Grist’s paintings prompt clear comparisons with Sutherland’s works, and we realise why she sees them as a point of reference. Yet as we look and reflect their distinctiveness becomes clearer. An artist living in north Wales whose work is based in the experience of moving through the land and retaining immediacy and flux; and an artist who never lived in Wales, but almost a century ago discovered Pembrokeshire and studied its landscape for the forms and colors it prompted as he worked.

Curated by Lisa Carter Grist and Ann Fiona Jones

The Graham Sutherland works are loaned from Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum of Wales and the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru – National Library of Wales

Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn arddangos gwaith Lisa Carter Grist a Graham Sutherland yn ein dwy ystafell oriel CELF.

Denwyd Sutherland at aberoedd a bryniau, ac mae Carter Grist hithau hefyd yn troi ei chefn ar y môr, mae’n well ganddi’r pantiau yng ngwelyau’r afonydd, ffosydd tywyll a’r bryniau gyda’u holion archeolegol. ‘Mae creu yn brofiad o symudiad, o gyfarfyddiad materol sydd ar ei fwyaf cywir pan fo ar ei fwyaf hylifol.’

Mae Mike Tooby’n ysgrifennu ynglŷn â’r drafodaeth rhwng gwaith y ddau artist:

Mae paentiadau Lisa Carter Grist yn annog cymariaethau amlwg gyda gweithiau Sutherland, ac rydym yn sylweddoli pam ei bod yn eu gweld fel pwynt cyfeirio. Eto wrth i ni syllu a myfyrio daw eu hynodrwydd yn gliriach. Artist sy’n byw yng ngogledd Cymru y mae ei gwaith wedi’i seilio ar y profiad o symud drwy’r tir ac yn cadw uniongyrchedd a llif; ac artist na fu’n byw yng Nghymru erioed, ond a ddarganfu Sir Benfro bron canrif yn ôl ac astudio ei thirwedd am y ffurfiau a’r lliwiau ysgogwyd ganddi wrth iddo weithio.

Curadwyd gan Lisa Carter Grist ac Ann Fiona Jones

Mae gweithiau Graham Sutherland ar fenthyg gan Amgueddfa Cymru ac y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru
