Coming from a background as a musician, from the late ‘sixties on he took inspiration from the free-form fluidity of jazz. Then he captured it in materials as diverse as gold, paper and plastic. Over the last four decades David Watkins has always been the leader in his field. As the exhibition at Ruthin Craft Centre shows, he kept changing ahead of trends that trailed after him. Not only that: he has been Professor of Goldsmithing and Jewellery at the Royal College of Art for 22 years and tutored the talent that continues to set the pace in contemporary jewellery making.

O gofio am ei gefndir fel cerddor deilliodd ei ysbrydoliaeth allan o hylifedd heintus y byd jazz. Yna fe’i crisialodd drwy gyfrwng deunyddiau megis aur, papur a phlastig. Yn ystod y pedwar degawd diwethaf y mae David Watkins wedi arwain yn y maes. Fel y dengys yr arddangosfa yng Nghanolfan Grefft newydd Rhuthun yr oedd bob amser yn arloesol ac ar y blaen i bawb arall oedd yn llusgo ar ei ôl. Mwy na hynny: y mae wedi bod yn Athro Eurychwaith a Gemwaith yn y Coleg Celf Brenhinol am 22 mlynedd ac y mae wedi meithrin doniau sydd yn parhau i osod safonau ym maes gemwaith gyfoes.
